Self Defence Classes
Fortnightly Personal Protection Skills Sessions

On the First and Third Monday evenings each month at Kodomon Martial Arts we run a class specifically for Personal Protection skills (Self Defence), taking into consideration, modern day civilian threats, the abilities of the students (age, size, etc), common sense, and appropriate responses. We concentrate and build the training in the Dojo around preventative self-defence before tackling physical responses, increasing your self-awareness and confidence in being able to handle conflict situations.

Mr Irvine has studied under three of the leading Self Defence Instructors for the Queensland Police Force, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police force and Riot Squad, and the Australian Military. The self defence elements of the curriculum integrate well with the traditional program, and a student of the Art of Karate will discover a strong ability to handle conflict in today's World.

The Self defence classes draw heavily on the principles of Kinetic Fighting used by Australia's Special Forces and now the rest of the Defence Force.

Many students at Kodomon train in both the Traditional Karate classes, as well as the specific Self Defence classes and courses. The curriculum is designed to support both. You can do one, or the other or both. The traditional Karate practice enables the Self Defence principles with skills and athletic ability to perform Personal Protection tasks with strong and effective technique, so they compliment each other well.

Sensei Irvine has trained in Okinawan Traditional Karate for over 35 years with all the aspects of technical efficiency that is found in this Martial Art, the Yoshinkan Aikido training Sensei studied for over 5 years complements the Karate extremely well, and the Kinetic Fighting polish these skills to a level that is World Class.

We expect that a Blackbelt in Traditional Karate is ably capable of defending themselves in any modern scenario, and are in fact, tested when reaching this level to ensure they develop the confidence that this is the case. All students are capable of attaining this capability. It is a matter of developing the appropriate mind-set, and the perseverance to maintain their training.

It is our wish that you will enjoy a rewarding time, whilst training at the Dojo. Life-long lessons and achievements are earned by those students who persevere with their training. Before long, you will discover that the other students who train at the Dojo are ordinary, friendly people, and many a strong friendship has been forged at the Club.

If there are any issues you wish to discuss about training, please feel free to talk to an instructor at the Dojo before or after classes or contact Sensei Irvine on 0405 010 999 or by email at [email protected]
